Principal's Message

Welcome back to term 3 everyone. I hope you all had a restful, relaxing and enjoyable break over the holidays. We are looking forward to seeing all of our students back at school tomorrow (Tuesday) ready for an exciting term of learning and growth.
This term will be a short term, only 9 weeks, but a very busy term. We have lots of different events on this term from hockey tournaments, 3 way conversations, Indonesian Week, the music festival, Father's Day, our school concert and many more exciting events. This is on top of all of the amazing opportunities that will be provided in our classrooms and playgrounds.
Our Year 3-6 students are looking forward to the community NAIDOC celebration on Friday at Hanlon Park. Families are welcome to join us at 10:00am to recognise NAIDOC Week which was in the holidays.
Just a reminder to families to check below for information regarding our upcoming 3 way learning conversations that are scheduled for next wee. We cannot wait to share the wonderful achievements your children have made and set some exciting goals for the future.
Have a great term everyone!
We are Respectful! We are Responsible! We are Safe! We are Nurturing!

Laudato Si': An Introduction to Action Planning
Today our staff spent a wonderful day together looking at Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si': On the care for our common home. We worked with Sarah Page from DOBCEL on an Introduction to Laudato Si' Action Planning. We looked closely at what we already do well in our school and things that we can do to improve in our care for our common home. The day provoked a lot of thought in our staff as to how we can work together to care for the environment and the people we live with. we will share more about this process in future newsletters.

SWPBS- School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports
School Wide Expectations
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support is: A multi-tiered framework for establishing the social culture and behaviour supports needed for a school to achieve behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.
Each newsletter we will share one aspect for each of our school wide expectations. We will focus on these at school and they may present an opportunity for some discussion with your children at home. You may ask them when they demonstrated one of the expectations or a time when someone displayed the expectation towards them.
We are RESPECTFUL! - Allow others to play.
We are RESPONSIBLE! - Wear the correct uniform with pride and care.
We are SAFE! - Watch out for others and community members.
We are NURTURING! - Offer support to adults and peers.

School Uniform Update
As we begin a new term it is a great opportunity to remind families about the wearing of correct school uniform.
Our current uniform requirements do not include the wearing of leggings and bike shorts as part of the sports uniform. This issue was taken to a recent School Advisory Council meeting and, after much discussion, it was voted unanimously that leggings and bike shorts are not included as part of our school sports uniform.
Sometimes children require alterations to the uniform for different reasons, including sensory concerns. If this is the case for you and your child please contact Jamie or Christine at school to discuss.
If for some reason your child cannot be in correct school uniform all we ask is that you send a message or note to the classroom teacher to inform them of the reasons that students are out of uniform.
Sports uniform days:
Foundation- Tuesday & Friday
1/2- Tuesday & Friday
3/4- Wednesday & Friday
5/6- Thursday and Friday
Staff will be monitoring the wearing of uniform more closely over the coming weeks.
Thank you for your support in this matter.

SchoolTV - Wellbeing Platform
Because parenting doesn’t come with a set of instructions, SchoolTV is a wellbeing resource that can support you in the challenges relating to modern-day parenting.
This award-winning resource helps build relationships, foster connections, enable understanding and break down barriers to navigate a pathway towards better mental health and wellbeing for young people. It can assist in starting conversations on topics that are sometimes awkward or difficult to tackle.

Sometimes after the holidays it can be a bit of a challenge to settle back into the routines of the school week. No doubt we have all enjoyed staying up late and sleeping in the next day, spending some extra time doing all of the fun stuff we really enjoy and really enjoying not having to run to a timetable or a bell. Some of us have probably also made the most of being able to do what we want when we want (to a certain degree!), playing by ourselves or with others. Sometimes this can make our first few days back at school a little challenging. Please see below some resources from SchoolTV that may be helpful as we return to school after a very well earned two week break.
In this edition of SchoolTV - Sleep
Students today have extremely busy schedules, with ever increasing responsibilities at school and at home. Many kids, especially adolescents, are going to bed later and later and are at risk of sleep deprivation. This affects three areas of a child’s development: psychological, physiological and psychosocial. All three are essential to a child's growth, learning ability and overall wellbeing. Sleep is vital to a child’s overall development and is as important as diet and exercise.
Sleep also strengthens a child’s immune systems and supports their ability to function properly on a daily basis. Children who do not get enough sleep show increased levels of aggressive behaviour, are less attentive and are much less active. Trying to catch up on sleep on weekends is not the answer and can still lead to severe sleep deprivation.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn about the importance of sleep and how sleep deprivation can have adverse effects on a child’s health and wellbeing.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

In this edition of SchoolTV - Resilience
Resilience is one of those skills that all kids need and should have. It refers to their ability to cope and adapt in situations when confronted with challenges such as adversity, trauma, tragedy, or even stress. It is essential to their mental health and wellbeing as part of their journey to adulthood. It is a skill that can be learned from an early age through the support of an adult role model.
However, being resilient does not mean your child won't experience any difficulties, but it will better equip them to manage those situations. Over-protective parenting can be viewed as being unhelpful towards the building of resilience. Although this may be a natural instinct, potentially experiencing failure is all part of the process. Encouraging children to take healthy risks will help them trust their capacity to deal with uncomfortable situations and increase their capacity for courage.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will gain an understanding of how to support their child’s brave behaviour to help them adapt and build resilience.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

In this edition of SchoolTV - Friendship & Belonging
Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. For others, this can be much harder to navigate. Belonging to a group that is like-minded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a young person’s wellbeing. It gives them a sense of security helping them feel valued which in turn builds their confidence.
Positive friendships are an important part of the journey to adulthood. Adult carers can support their child or teenager by providing guidance in the many social and emotional skills required for a healthy relationship. This will help them to obtain, retain and maintain friendships. However, not all friendship are regarded as positive. Sometimes young people develop negative or toxic friendships. Therefore it is also important for them to learn how to identify, avoid or deal with such a friendship.
In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers can learn how to support their young person’s friendship so that they experience a sense of belonging.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.
